DOULOS 2 on May 13-16th, 2010

Doulos?

A what? A Doulos?  What in the world is that and how do you even pronounce it correctly?  Doulos is the Greek word for “servant” or “service.”  The focus of this yearly trip is on serving others and most importantly, how Christ served us.

In Mark Chapter 10, verse 45, it states: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

I think this passage is difficult for Christians to believe, especially myself.  Whenever I think of Christ, I automatically assume that he is king of kings and the service part is out of the question.  This in fact is the complete opposite of how I should be thinking.  Christ was the ULTIMATE SERVANT.  He served in so many ways that we could only dream of doing.  With this in mind, this is where the Doulos retreat for Jr. High and Sr. High guys comes into play.

This year we served at two locations.  We first served at Stewpot Kitchen, which is a non-profit organization in downtown Jackson that serves lunch to the homeless every DAY of the YEAR.  We went on a Friday morning to help serve lunch and assist the staff in any way.  Secondly, we served at the Mustard Seed in Brandon on Saturday morning.  The Mustard Seed is a daycare service for families that have a mentally-disabled child or adult.  The center focuses on giving the opportunity to teach these children and adults about Christ and his love for them in every way.  We helped by washing the centers vans and picking up trash at the facility.

The rest of the trip was followed by tubing and skiing on the lake, eating out, grilling out, movie watching, church going, and fellowshipping times of good ole fun.  This is a great experience for your youth to be a part of and I am encouraged to see them attend next year!
